How Do Solar Energy Systems Work?

1. Sunlight Hits the Panels
The light from the Sun is made up of energy particles called photons.
On the surface of the solar panel, there are mostly photovoltaic (PV) cells made from silicon (a semiconductor material).
2. Electrons Move in Photovoltaic Cells
- Each PV cell consists of two semiconductor layers:
N-type layer (negative): Doped with phosphorus, it contains an abundance of electrons.
P-type layer (positive): Doped with boron, it has a deficiency of electrons (holes).
- When these two layers are combined, a PN junction is formed.
- The photons from the Sun excite the atoms of this semiconductor material, releasing electrons.
3. An Electric Current is Generated (DC – Direct Current)
The freed electrons move in one direction at the PN junction.
This movement creates an electrical potential (voltage).
When the external circuit of the cell is connected, electrons flow through this circuit: this is the electric current!
The energy obtained at this stage is in the form of direct current (DC).
4. It is converted to Alternating Current (AC) with an inverter
The electricity used in homes and industrial facilities is in the form of alternating current (AC).
DC cannot be used directly. Therefore, an inverter device is used.
The inverter converts DC to 220V (or 380V three-phase) AC, allowing it to:
